The Canadian Foundation for Polish Studies presents a free screening of Halina Ogonowska-Coates’ documentary, Exiles: The Story of a Polish Journey, on Sunday, March 4th, at 2pm at Concordia’s De Seve theatre (1400, Boul. Maisonneuve Ouest, Métro Guy-Concordia.)

The film will be followed by a short discussion period with a very special guest who will share her personal story of displacement and answer questions. Refreshments will be served. Entrance is free and everyone is welcome.

CFPS is a small non-profit group of volunteers who work to promote and share Polish history and culture in the community and to the general public. For additional information, please do not hesitate to contact us at CFPS.Montreal@gmail.com .
“As a child I loved my mother but she seemed different from other mothers. She didn’t know how old she was. She couldn’t remember where she was born. I wondered what had happened to her that she could have forgotten such important things. It had something to do with the Second World War…”

Krystyna is one of 732 ‘Polish children’ who survived forced deportation to the Soviet Union and was given a home in New Zealand in 1944. Her remarkable story, a composite portrait drawn from interviews with Polish survivors, begins in a peaceful Polish village and follows her family’s harrowing journey to a labor camp in Siberia, the terrible flight to freedom, and Krystyna’s lonely voyage to a safe refuge in New Zealand.<!-- D(["mb","–>

This is a beautifully evoked account of a child’s journey through Europe at war, and a young woman’s bewildering encounter with rural New Zealand.

So after purchasing my lone textbook for this semester and trying to calmly leave the McGill Bookstore, I was confronted by two bumbling security guards at the door who said, “Sir, we need to check your receipt.” After reading this article I was ready for something like this. I replied, “Are you implying that I stole something?” The guard threw his hands up mumbled something to his superior who was checking someone else’s receipt. He told me that I had to get in line and wait my turn to have my receipt checked. So apparently, if I didn’t buy anything… I would have been free to go. (like shoplifters would actually buy something to hide the fact that they stole something else) What further incensed me is that neither of the security guards were actually looking at the titles of the books purchased and cross checking it with the receipt, the were simply going through the motions and wasting my time. I realized these rent-a-cops were just simply following their orders and it would take more than one disobedient soul to actually make a difference, so I complied. Anyone out there who’s reading this, please read the linked article. Don’t respond to these professional time-wasters standing at the door and just exit the bookstore like a civilized human being.
